What is PFAD?
Palm Fatty Acid Distillate is a co-product of the physical refining of crude palm oil. When crude palm oil is deodorised, the free fatty acids are stripped off as a distillate — that distillate is PFAD. It is a high-FFA, semi-solid material at room temperature, valued as a feedstock precisely because it is a residue stream rather than a food-grade oil. This makes it attractive both for biodiesel production and for the oleochemical sector, where it is converted into soaps, candles, fatty acids and other downstream products.
